Fix your Mac
If there is one downside to owning Apple hardware it's the cost of repairs. I've just come across iFixit, which has excellent do-it-yourself guides to replacing all the major components in your Mac. Yay!

Yes, the guides are detailed and very good. However, do be careful - at times the warnings they give about the fragility of some of the components tend toward understatement!
(Taking a look at their HD replacement guide now, it seems they've improved the language around the part that I found problematic - maybe they got a lot of feedback from people like me...)
