PLT Scheme 4 is out

PLT Scheme 4.0 is out. We've been using the pre-releases for months so this release isn't particularly significant to us. However, for Universities and other institutions having an official release is important. I do think that too many individual developers stick with out-dated versions of PLT Scheme. The number of questions about 372, which is at least a year old, amazes me. Pre-releases are so much better! Go upgrade!

Advising people to use pre-release software seems like a very bad idea to me. In my experience, such a release/pre-release division is very useful. (Indeed, why would PLT Scheme even have the distinction if it weren't useful?) If the pre-release is ready for release, then why not release it already?

Well, on Ubuntu you can until now only get 372 via Synaptic. That might be a reason.

Robert, my experience is that the pre-release software quickly becomes stable enough for day-to-day use. I think the things that take a long time to finish off are the teaching tools, which are not so important for most people (though very important for the PLT Scheme project). Generally I think anyone seriously programming in PLT Scheme should be on the pre-releases.

That's also my opinion. In general, pre-releases offer more features, fix bugs and have better performance, all of which are nice things.
